Kensington Announces Results of Productivity Trends Survey to Commemorate 5th Anniversary of Original iPad®

  • March 30, 2015

Despite advancements in technology, 35% say they are working longer hours than five years ago, 19% working over 50 hours a week

Kensington, a worldwide leader in delivering smart. safe. simple. computing accessories, today announced the results of a survey conducted in February 2015, to see how much people feel the workplace has changed in the past five years. The announcement coincides with the 5th anniversary of the first sale of the original iPad, which has had a dramatic impact on productivity in the workplace since its introduction on April 3, 2010.

As the first company to introduce a keyboard case to enhance the productivity of the iPad, Kensington was interested to see how its customers felt their work lives had changed over the past five years. One of the most interesting findings revealed that despite all the technology advancements that have been achieved since 2010 to make people’s lives easier, it hasn’t translated into fewer working hours. In fact, technology may well be contributing to longer working hours. More than 35% of respondents reported they are working more hours than they did five years ago, and 19% are working more than 50 hours per week.

In another surprising statistic that shows just how plugged in users are into today’s technology, 40% admitted they check their email within 15 minutes of waking up in the morning. And in a nod to the changing culture of the modern workplace, 97% of workers who started their careers post-2000 said they are expecting a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) allowance from their employer in 2015.

A few other noteworthy results from the survey:

  • 59% are more comfortable at their home workstation than at their office desk
  • 34% of computer owners lock their devices at home
  • 48% feel they are least productive when commuting

With BYOD becoming more mainstream, the iPad, Microsoft® Surface Pro 3 and other tablets will have an increasingly important role in productivity for professionals. To address this, Kensington has recently introduced products that help workers get more from their iPad, including the KeyFolio Thin X3with PowerLift technology that charges a smartphone, the MiniSaver Mobile Lock, and the KP400 Switchable Keyboard that allows the user to alternate typing between a laptop and a tablet at the press of a shortcut key.

Kensington has compiled 20 of the most revealing comments its customers offered about how the iPad has, or has not, impacted their working lives over the past five years.
