Our Universal docks offer the ability to work with a 2nd screen and also provide the connectivity options you’ll need for your extra monitors and peripherals.
All of our docks connect to the laptop via a single USB port. A 3-foot/1-meter cable is supplied to ensure that the dock can be positioned on the desk in a preferable location rather than forcing a location due to a shorter cable.
If you are seeking to resurrect a previously loved monitor in order to increase your productivity, you will most likely find that it is a VGA monitor.
A VGA monitor connects to your computer, or a dock, via a VGA connection. Video Graphics Array ports were first introduced in 1987 by IBM. VGA is an analog technology that has been superseded by digital technologies such as DVI and HDMI for high-performance output.
While the oldest of the commonly found connections, VGA is absolutely fine for everyday office computing requirements and casual video playing.
VGA ports don’t carry audio signals, so the dedicated audio out and in ports offered by a universal dock, or the host computer, need to be connected to the audio jack on the VGA monitor if the monitor offers integrated speakers or a microphone that the user wishes to use.
A VGA cable is generally supplied with your monitor. You will need a DVI-to-VGA adapter to connect to the dock. The VGA cable is connected to the DVI-to-VGA adapter, which is, in turn, connected to the docking station. This helps to avoid the dock being unnecessarily large in design.
DVI, Digital Visual Interface, is a digital connection technology that is popular, as it can also support analog signals such as those carried by VGA cables.
There are three types of DVI connector.
DVI-I: DVI-Integrated connectors can support analog and digital signals, so it can be used to output to a DVI or VGA monitor, though not simultaneously.
DVI-D: DVI-Digital connectors can only be used with digital displays.
DVI-A: DVI-Analog ports can only be used with analog displays such as VGA.
All our DVI ports are the digital and analog friendly DVI-I type. This ensures you can connect your Kensington docking station directly to a DVI monitor or, with the help of a DVI-to-VGA adapter, to a VGA monitor.
High Definition Multimedia Interface was first introduced in 2003 by the consumer electronics industry to replace a wide variety of aging analog outputs and quickly became a widely adopted digital standard. HDMI ports are commonly found on modern HD TVs and computer monitors.
HDMI, along with DisplayPort, connections are favored by manufacturers of 4K high resolution monitors.
HDMI monitors, like VGA monitors, can be connected to a Kensington Universal Docking Station directly to the dock’s HDMI port, via the dock’s DVI port with the help of an adapter.
An HDMI monitor is best connected directly to the dock’s HDMI port.
DisplayPort connections, are digital connections used to transmit large amounts of data and suitable for use with all HDMI monitors, including 4K displays.
Connect a DisplayPort monitor directly to a DisplayPort port using a DisplayPort cable.
Alternatively, an HDMI-to-DisplayPort adapter can be used to connect a DisplayPort monitor to the dock’s HDMI port.
