“Orbit Trackball is outstanding, but DO NOT install software”
I love the orbit trackball and it's ambidextrous design. It is very comfortable, even after hours of use and is very easy to clean.
The mouseworks software is a disaster and that's the only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars. I installed it on my Vista machine and I lost control of my machine, The software just kept opening window after window and eventually crashed my computer. Even after a restart same problem. The uninstall did not remove the entire program and I had to go hunting for left over fragments and manually remove them. I tried reinstalling it and had the same problem. So in summary, plug this trackball into your computer, let windows use a default mouse driver and you'll be very happy.

“Orbit™ Optical Trackball 07/Feb/2014”
My gripe with this product is that it uses three tiny balls to position the ball. These balls are about 1.5 mm and I do not see a way of getting them out to clean them and around them. I am guessing that what I am seeing in there is dust, dirt, and bodily oils. These contaminates cause the ball to sound and feel like the ball is skipping just like an old ball mouse, but because you have your fingers on the ball you still get to move the mouse icon.
I love the ambidextrous design to help avoid overuse of one hand. I have the one at work on the left and the one at home on the right.
Appearance: not important to me.
The store that I purchased from had only this model (without the scroll ring).
I will contact Kensington to see if any of their other models (with scroll rings) have a better designs to avoid my one gripe.

“Most useful tool I've ever owned! ”
I'm ordering my second one. The other has lasted at least 6 years. I enjoy it so much because of the carpal tunnel symptoms in my hands and forearms. I don't have to lift this mouse or move it at all. When I had a torn rotator cuff this was one of the very few things I could still do with that arm with no restrictions or pain. This mouse has been invaluable to me! I can put the mouse in one place and never have to move it while I'm working or playing a game. I put it on a non-slip pad (those new nylon (?) pot holders) and we are set until I have to get up for some reason.
